How to Make a Homemade Bong

If you enjoy smoking herb or tobacco, you may want to try making your own bong at home. A bong is a device that filters the smoke through water, making it smoother and cooler for your lungs. You can make a bong using some cheap, basic supplies that you may already have around your house. In this article, we will show you four easy ways to make a homemade bong using a plastic bottle, a fruit, a mason jar, and a bamboo stick. Let’s get started!

Method 1: Plastic Bottle Bong

This is probably the simplest and most common way to make a homemade bong. All you need is a plastic bottle, a pen, some aluminum foil, and some water.

  1. Fill up a plastic bottle ¼ of the way with water. Any kind of plastic bottle will work, but keep in mind that the larger the bottle is, the bigger the bong hits will be. Don’t worry if you don’t have the cap to the bottle—you won’t need it! The water you’re putting in the bottle is what the smoke will filter through when you’re smoking the bong.
  2. Poke a hole just below the neck of the water bottle to make the carb. The carb is the hole you’ll cover with your finger at first and then let go of so you can inhale the smoke in the bottle. Make the hole large enough for air to easily flow through it, but not so big that you won’t be able to cover it with your finger. You can use any sharp tool to make the hole, like a pen, a knife, or a straightened out paperclip. Be careful that you don’t cut yourself or make the hole too big.
  3. Make a second hole slightly above the waterline for the downstem. You’ll put the downstem—the tube with the bowl attached to it—through this hole at an angle so the end inside of the bottle is submerged in the water. Make this hole with the same tool you used to make the first one. Make the hole about the same width as a pen. If it’s any smaller, you may have a hard time pushing the downstem through, and if it’s any larger, the downstem may be too loose.
  4. Use a highlighter and foil to fashion a downstem for the bong. To make the downstem, empty the contents of a highlighter so you’re left with just the hollow plastic tube. You may need to use scissors or pliers to pull the highlighter apart. Then, tear off a small piece of aluminum foil and wrap it around the wide end of the plastic tube. Press the center of the foil down into the tube to make the bowl and poke tiny holes in it so the smoke can get through. If you already have a downstem, you can use that with your plastic bottle bong instead.
  5. Push the open end of the downstem through the bottom hole you made. Angle the downstem downward so the open end inside of the bottle is submerged in
the water. When you’re finished inserting
the downstem, the bowl should be angled upward on
    the outside of
    the bottle. If
    you’re having trouble fitting
    the downstem through
    the hole, make
    the hole
a little bigger and try again.
    Be careful not to make
    the hole too big or
the downstem will be too loose.
  6. Pack
the bowl and try out your new bong.
To use your plastic bottle bong,
    start by covering
the carb—the hole you made at
    the top of
    the bottle—with your finger.
light up your herb or tobacco in
    the bowl and inhale through
    the mouthpiece of
    the bottle.
    When you’re ready to take
    a hit,
    release your finger from
    the carb and inhale
    the smoke from
    the bottle.

Method 2: Fruit Bong

If you want to add some natural flavor to your smoking experience, you can make a bong out of a fruit, such as an apple, a pear, or a pineapple. You’ll need a fruit, a pen, some aluminum foil, and optionally, a knife.

  1. Choose a fruit that is large enough to hold water and has a firm texture. Apples and pears are good choices because they are easy to carve and have a natural bowl shape at the top. Pineapples are also great because they have a sweet and juicy flavor that can enhance your smoke.
  2. Cut off the top of the fruit and scoop out some of the flesh to make a chamber for the water. You can use a knife or a spoon to do this, but be careful not to puncture the bottom or the sides of the fruit. Leave enough flesh inside the fruit to support the structure and prevent leaks.
  3. Poke a hole through the side of the fruit to make the downstem. You can use a pen or a skewer to do this, but make sure it’s long enough to reach the water chamber. The hole should be slightly above the water level and angled downward. You can widen the hole with a knife if it’s too narrow for the pen.
  4. Remove the ink tube from the pen and insert it into the hole you made. This will be your downstem and mouthpiece. Make sure it fits snugly and doesn’t wobble or leak. You can seal any gaps with some of the fruit flesh or some gum.
  5. Make a bowl out of aluminum foil and attach it to the top of the fruit. Tear off a small piece of foil and wrap it around your finger to make a cone shape. Then, poke some holes in the bottom of the cone with a toothpick or a needle. Place the foil cone over the hole at the top of the fruit and press it down gently to secure it.
  6. Pack
the bowl and enjoy your fruit bong.
    To use your fruit bong,
the water chamber with enough water to cover
    the end of
    the downstem.
light up your herb or tobacco in
    the bowl and inhale through
    the pen.
    You can also cover
    the carb—the hole where
    the pen meets
the fruit—with your finger for more control over
    the airflow.

Method 3: Mason Jar Bong

If you want to make a homemade bong that looks more like a traditional bong, you can use a mason jar, a straw, some duct tape, and some tin foil. You’ll also need a knife and a marker.

  1. Fill up a mason jar with water about halfway. You can use any size of mason jar, but make sure it has a metal lid that you can cut through.
  2. Trace the outline of a straw on the lid of the mason jar with a marker. This will be where you insert the straw as your downstem. Make sure the straw is long enough to reach below the water level in the jar.
  3. Cut out the circle you traced on the lid with a knife. Be careful not to cut yourself or damage the lid too much. You can use scissors or pliers to help you cut through the metal.
  4. Insert
    the straw through
    the hole you made in
the lid and secure it with duct tape.
Make sure there are no gaps or leaks around
    the straw.
You can also wrap some duct tape around
the straw itself to make it sturdier.
  5. Make
a bowl out of tin foil and attach it to
    the end of
the straw that sticks out of
    the lid.
    You can use
the same method as in Method 2,
or you can simply wrap some foil around
the straw and poke some holes in it.
  6. Screw
    the lid back on
the jar and test out your mason jar bong.
To use your mason jar bong,
light up your herb or tobacco in
    the bowl and inhale through
    the other end of
    the straw.
You don’t need to worry about covering
    a carb for this bong,
    as you can simply unscrew
    the lid slightly to release
    the smoke.

Method 4: Bamboo Bong

If you want to make a homemade bong that has an exotic and natural look, you can use a bamboo stick, a saw, a drill, a bowl, and a stem. You’ll also need some water and optionally, some glue.

  1. Cut off a section of bamboo that has at least one node in it. A node is where the bamboo has a solid ring that divides it into segments. You want to have one node at one end of your bamboo section, as this will be where you hold the water for your bong.
