What is a Gravity Bong?

A gravity bong is a type of homemade bong that uses water and pressure to draw smoke into the lungs. It consists of a two-piece chamber system that nestles together—one larger chamber to hold the water and a second smaller chamber to hold the bowl and capture the smoke. As the herb or tobacco is lit, gravity pulls smoke into the bottle using water in a container to create suction. A gravity bong is also known by various names such as GB, geeb, bucket bong, or waterfall bong.

How Does a Gravity Bong Work?

A gravity bong works by submerging a small bottle with a bowl of herb or tobacco on top in a larger bottle or bucket of water. While lighting the herb or tobacco, slowly draw the bottle out of the water to fill it with smoke from the burning substance. Unscrew the lid, put your mouth over the bottle’s opening, and push the bottle down to let gravity propel the smoke into your lungs.

Bucket Bong vs. Waterfall Bong

There are two main types of gravity bongs: bucket bongs and waterfall bongs. Both use air pressure and water to draw smoke, but they have some differences in their design and operation.

  • Bucket bong:

A bucket bong is made out of two containers, with the larger, open top container filled with water. The smaller has an attached bowl and open bottom, and the smaller is placed into the larger. Once the bowl is lit, the operator must move the small container up, causing a pressure difference. Smoke slowly fills the small jar until the user removes the bowl and inhales the contents.

  • Waterfall bong:

A waterfall bong is made up of only one container. The container must have a bowl and a small hole near the base so the water can drain easily. As the water flows out of the container, air is forced through the bowl and causes the substance to burn and accumulate smoke in the bong.

Why Use a Gravity Bong?

A gravity bong is a simple and effective way to consume herb or tobacco. Some of the benefits of using a gravity bong are:

  • Potent hits:

Gravity bongs force heavily concentrated smoke into your lungs, filling them to capacity beyond the average hit from a pipe or joint. When you inhale the contents of the smoky bottle into your lungs, you are essentially breathing in the smoke from an entire bowl of herb or tobacco in one go. For this reason, gravity bongs are certainly not for the faint of heart.

  • Budget-friendly:

Gravity bongs are a great way to stretch your stash, as they require very little herb or tobacco to produce a lot of smoke. You can also make your own gravity bong using some everyday household objects, such as plastic bottles, buckets, or jars.

  • Crafty and fun:

Making your own gravity bong can be a fun DIY project that allows you to customize your smoking device according to your preferences. You can experiment with different sizes, shapes, and materials to create your own unique gravity bong.

How to Make Your Own Gravity Bong?

If you want to make your own gravity bong, you will need some basic materials and tools that you can find around your house or at a local store. Here are some steps to follow:

Bucket Bong

  1. Cut off the bottom of a plastic bottle (about 2 liters) using scissors or a knife.
  2. Make a small hole in the center of the bottle’s cap using a drill or a nail.
  3. Insert a metal socket (used as a bowl) into the hole and secure it with some tape or glue.
  4. Place an aerator screen (used as a filter) inside of the socket.
  5. Fill a large bucket or another container with water.
  6. Screw the cap with the socket onto the bottle and submerge it in the water until only the cap is above the surface.
  7. Pack some herb or tobacco into the socket and light it with a lighter or match.
  8. Slowly lift up the bottle until it is almost out of the water, but not completely.
  9. Unscrew the cap and put your mouth over the opening of the bottle.
  10. Push down on
